Successful Shipment of Main Equipment for West Africa’s First Green Ammonia Plant

Recently, KAPSOM successfully shipped the main equipment for its independently developed green ammonia project with an annual production capacity of 100 tons in late July 2024. This achievement marks another breakthrough for KAPSOM in the field of small-scale, smart green ammonia production.

Agricultural Productivity

Ammonia is widely used as a fertilizer, with about 70% utilized in agriculture. However, traditional ammonia production often relies on hydrogen separated from natural gas, leading to significant carbon dioxide emissions. Globally, ammonia production accounts for about 1.3% of energy-related CO2 emissions. In the agricultural sector, green ammonia is increasingly important. As the demand for renewable energy continues to grow, green ammonia is seen as a key solution for sustainable development. Zero-carbon fertilizers produced from green ammonia not only significantly enhance crop yield and quality but also effectively protect soil, water, and air quality.

Hydro Power
The launch of West Africa’s first green ammonia demonstration project will further aid the region in achieving its carbon peaking and carbon neutrality targets, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable agricultural development. To mitigate the intermittency of renewable energy, we have integrated an IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) power supply system in the hydrogen production unit, capable of handling the high variability of renewable energy inputs. This system harnesses photovoltaic power during the day and battery energy storage at night, ensuring the continuous and stable operation of the ammonia synthesis unit. Facing the challenge of limited battery storage capacity at night, we employ a bypass method, allowing a small gas volume to enter the synthesis tower to maintain bed temperature, while a large gas volume circulates in the main loop, achieving low-load, low-power consumption operation.

Membrane Technology

Additionally, this project is the smallest green ammonia experimental facility undertaken by KAPSOM. Throughout the development of this compact and smart demonstration unit, the KAPSOM team has demonstrated exceptional professional expertise and collaborative spirit. From initial planning, design, and material procurement to equipment manufacturing, inspection, and shipping, every stage reflected the team’s wisdom and effort. During production, we strictly controlled every detail, optimizing the equipment’s operation, shutdown, and safety performance through precise acceptance and commissioning stages. Leveraging big data analysis, we further enhanced the operational capacity and overall efficiency of the equipment.

In recent years, we have seized strategic opportunities, focusing on product layout and technology reserves in the green ammonia full-industry chain R&D and equipment segment, and have successfully developed low-temperature ammonia cracking technology. Looking ahead, we will continue to adhere to the “customer first” business philosophy, optimize industry layout and service systems, gain deep insights into market demand, and increase investment in innovation and R&D to provide customers with superior products and services.
